Earlier this year, the Charlotte Comicon family lost a dear friend, Kevin C. Hunt. In his own words…
“I am a Christian, husband, father. A costumed adventurer, comic book man, loyal friend, teacher, Jedi.”
Kevin was an art teacher at West Hoke Elementary School in North Carolina. He married his life long sweetheart, Jackie. And many years later, with their children by their sides, Jackie and Kevin renewed their wedding vows at the Charlotte Comicon Winter 2016 show.
Kevin was a man who never met a stranger, and always had a kind word to share. He was a member of The Excelsior League, a charity organization that focuses on brightening the lives and smiles of children fighting life threatening illnesses.
Even after Kevin began his battle with cancer, he didn’t let that stand in his way. Kevin continued to cosplay with the Excelsior League and at local conventions, though he began to add bald characters to his repertoire, choosing to wear his ‘war wounds’ like a crown. Kevin delighted children of all ages with his Lex Luthor, Kingpin, and Ming the Merciless cosplays, and continued to be a Time Lord and Jedi Master to all.
We, at Charlotte Comicon, wanted to do something to honor Kevin’s memory. He loved cosplay. He loved music. He loved his Comicon ‘family’. And so, Karaoke for a Cause was born! Jackie has asked that the money raised go towards buying much needed art supplies for the students at West Hoke. The art department had undergone major budget cuts prior to the loss of Kevin, and Jackie said he would want what’s best for his students.
This is a separate, after-hours event for ages 18 and up, that does not require a Charlotte Comicon admission bracelet. We will be taking money at the door that night during the event. There is a $5 MINIMUM donation required for entry, but of course, any amount above that is greatly appreciated!
The Karaoke for a Cause event will take place from 8pm-11pm in the Carolina Ballroom (the cosplay room). DJ Nixxx will be on hand as karaoke host/DJ for the evening. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Prizes will be awarded for Best Costume and Best Costume/Song Combo (Obvious examples would include Deadpool singing a Wham! song, Batman singing ‘The Joker’, or Poison Ivy singing…well…’Poison Ivy’. What we want is the not-so-obvious pairings. Use your imagination! Get creative! Bring it and sing it!) Light refreshments will be provided. Alcoholic beverages can be purchased, with proper ID, at the hotel bar. And we will be selling raffle tickets for some amazing donated items.
Admission to this event is based on the maximum allowable capacity for the ballroom. If, in the glorious event, we reach maximum capacity, we will institute a one-out/one-in policy. If you are not able to attend the Karaoke for a Cause event, but would still like to help, we will be accepting donations in the cosplay room throughout the day on Saturday.
Thank you for your support. We miss Kevin greatly, but his legacy lives on. Excelsior!
